Anti-decubitus cushions for wheelchairs: Pressure distribution, temperature control and ventilation

Using pressure relieving cushions in wheelchairs is an important measure to reduce risk of pressure ulcers. A proper wheelchair should relieve and distribute the weight of the body in the best possible way. To do this, the cushion must possess both weight-bearing capacities and softness. It must lend support to the body, and last, but not least, it must be simple to use.

Until some 15 years ago the general belief was that pressure ulcers were the fruits of pressure alone. Now we know that both temperature and moisture are as important, and must hence be avoided.
